What gets deducted
- National Pension 4.75% (capped at a monthly income of ₩6.59 million)
- Health Insurance 3.595%, plus Long-term Care at 13.14% of the health premium
- Employment Insurance 0.9%
- Income tax from the government withholding table, plus local income tax of 10% of that
Your employer pays a matching share of pension, health and employment insurance on top of your salary, so it does not come out of your pay.
Why your payslip may differ
- Dependents: each dependent you register lowers the monthly income tax.
- Withholding rate: you can ask HR to withhold 80%, 100% or 120% of the standard tax. It evens out at year-end settlement.
- Allowances: some allowances (meals, childcare, certain research or car allowances) are tax-free up to a limit.
- Severance: Korean salaries are usually quoted without severance. If your offer says severance is included, divide by 13 instead of 12.
FAQ
Is a Korean salary quoted before or after tax?
Almost always before tax (gross), as an annual figure. Your monthly pay is that amount divided by 12, minus the deductions above.
Do foreigners pay the same rates?
Yes, the same insurance rates and tax brackets apply. Some foreign employees can choose a flat 19% tax instead — see our guide on the flat tax.
What is a good salary in Korea?
For a single person, take-home pay of ₩2.5–3 million (a ₩35–45 million salary) is a common range for office jobs in Seoul. Rent is usually the biggest cost.
